When you open a bag of premium KOM lump charcoal, you will find pieces of different sizes. This is not a defect, but an advantage if you know how to use them.

Large Pieces (Lumps)

The largest pieces of KOM charcoal are your gold for long smoking (low and slow). They burn the slowest and most stable. Sort them out and save them for pork butt or brisket, where you need hours of stable heat.

Medium Pieces

This is the standard size for everyday BBQ. Medium KOM charcoal pieces are ideal for grilling steaks, chicken, and vegetables. They light easily and provide excellent direct heat.

Small Pieces and Chips

Don't throw them away! The smallest pieces at the bottom of the bag are perfect for quickly lighting a chimney starter. They act as kindling for the larger KOM charcoal pieces.

Arranging in the Grill

Always put larger KOM charcoal pieces at the bottom and smaller ones on top. This ensures good airflow - if you put small ones at the bottom, they will clog the vents.

KOM charcoal from beech, oak and hornbeam offers an excellent balance of sizes, giving you flexibility for any type of cooking.
